When Your Marketing Isn’t Working, Go Back to Ground Zero: Your Audience

Est Read Time: 4.5 Minutes

If you feel like you have been showing up on social media and you’ve been making quality content but no one is engaging with it, your reach is low, and you’re feeling like it’s been a huge waste of time.

I get it! I’ve been there 😬

When I first started Razzle Marketing the intention was to get into Facebook Advertising, but the people I was reaching were asking for social media help. As many entrepreneurs, I took the work I could get –especially since I had a new baby and zero income.

I needed the work.

After the first year of having zero Facebook Ads clients but 3 steady social media clients I decided to get serious and dive into everything content, marketing, and social media. Now here I am, three years later and really ready to grow my business.

But it took a lot of work and a lot of dedication. I spent more time listening to my clients and learning where they were struggling so I could actually help them.

No one likes feeling like they wasted their time and money more than me. I grew up in a home where we barely lived paycheque to paycheque and have been working hard after college to not be living like that myself.

Before I go too far off topic, I just wanted to make it clear that I know how you’re feeling. Whether you’ve invested tons of time and/or money into your social media, it sucks to feel like you’re talking to a wall after all your efforts 😑

That’s what it felt like when I first started Razzle. And you know why we felt like that?

We lacked clarity.

More importantly, we lacked clarity on who we were trying to talk to! If you’re a real estate agent, or product based business you may feel pressured to try to talk to everyone because ‘anyone’ can buy from you.

But the reality is, when you try to talk to everyone you end up talking to…well, a wall, because your messaging will rarely connect. If you have figured out who your audience is and who you are talking to you are able to not just create content they will care about, but you’ll also be able to use language that really captures their attention and keeps it.

You want them to keep coming back to your brand time and time again for the value you’re providing them.

I cannot stress enough that when it comes to marketing in any form, it begins and ends with who you are serving! You are solving a problem they have. Your business is literally about them!

Make it about them.

This means getting into the nitty gritty and really defining who you are serving. You need to know what their struggles are, what they’re dreaming of, where they spend their time online and offline, and what their life is like so you can meet them where they are.

I hope that you’re starting to understand why you could be feeling like your marketing isn’t working.

If you’re reading through this even questioning if you know your audience, chances are you can probably spend more time on them. Actually, being clear on your audience is an ongoing thing –meaning that you always need to come back to your audience!

I am trying to make a habit that every 6 months we do a Client/Audience Outreach weeks. Starting this year we want to reach out to current and past clients and ask them about what they’re struggling with and what their desired results are so we can really hone our services for them!

Now, to help you get started we created an Ideal Audience Questionnaire that you can get emailed straight to your inbox. This is so you can have it forever and if you ever need to go back to it you can find it in your inbox by searching for ‘Ideal Audience’.

Just click the button so you can have it sent to you!

Now before you go, let me quickly recap why it’s important that you take the time to clarify your audience:

  • Clarifying your audience will help you to tailor your message to their specific needs and interests.
  • It will help you to create more effective and engaging content that resonates with your target market.
  • You can optimize your budget by narrowing down your target audience, so you don’t waste your resources marketing to people who aren’t interested.
  • You’ll be better able to measure the success of your marketing efforts by knowing which specific channels and strategies are resonating with your desired audience.
  • You’ll be able to target customers more accurately with personalized messages that are relevant to their interests.
  • You’ll be able to better understand and anticipate the needs of your customers by getting to know who they are and what they care about.
  • You’ll be able to target the right people at the right time with the right message.
  • Clarifying your audience will help you to create a unified voice for your brand and make sure everyone is on the same page.
  • You’ll be able to use data to better inform your marketing decisions and improve your campaigns.
  • It will help you save time and money by ensuring you’re reaching the right people with the right message.

I hope that you feel inspired and motivated to get onto defining your audience/ideal clients so that you can start seeing some real results in your online marketing. I really believe that if you spend enough time on your audience you’ll start to see quite the difference in results! (At least I know I did for myself and my clients!)

So if you’re ready to start seeing results for the work you’re doing then take a step back and get clear on your audience. The results will come with time!
