5 Reasons You Need to Define Your Audience

Est Read Time: 7 Mintues

I realize that I have been talking about your audience quite a bit lately, but it’s because of how important it is to your business, your brand, and your marketing that you have your audience defined!

I’ve talked in previous posts that you need to define your audience as one person, also known as your Ideal Client/Customer Avatar aka your ICA.

I won’t go too into details here, but the reason you want to define one person as your audience is that it really helps you connect and be more personable in your marketing.

If you don’t know what an ICA is you should definitely read my blog post because today I’m talking about the why and you may be a little confused if you don’t understand what an ICA is.

[If you’d like to read more about what an ICA check out my blog post: What is an ICA?]

Why do you need to have your audience so clearly defined all the way down to one person?

Well, I actually have 5 reasons for you!

If you want to grow your community (especially organically), the best and easiest way is to connect authentically and consistently with your audience. And you connect with them through your content and your stories.

Your stories are posts that only last for 24 hours and are perfect to share more of your behind-the-scenes and other random content that allows your audience to see you and get to know you on a more personal level.

Meanwhile, your content is meant to serve your audience.

I’ll say that again because this is so important and actually it’s my first point as to why you need to define your audience.

Let’s dive right into 5 Reasons you NEED to define your audience:

1. Your Content Is FOR Your Audience

If you don’t know your audience in and out how do you expect to create quality content for them?

When you know your audience deeply you’ll know exactly what kind of content to create. You’ll know their struggles and you know how to give them quick wins to combat their struggles.

You also know what their dreams and goals are so you’ll know how to inspire them and connect with them through your shared dreams and goals.

Heck, you’ll also know just what kind of entertaining post to share with them to brighten their day!

When you’re feeling stuck on what content to create all you have to do is refer back to your avatar and create content around a pain, goal, or desire they have.

The content you create needs to make them feel seen and heard for them to know, like, and trust you more.

Trust me, your content is a key component of connecting you to new and long-time followers, it’s what will keep them coming back until they are ready to buy from you!

Building notoriety, likeability, and trust take time though, so be preapred to play the long game and put in the work. What you do today will effect your business down the line whether it’s days, months, weeks, or even years!

Growing your community doesn’t happen overnight. It takes creating consistent and quality content tailored to your audience. So if you’re not willing to put in the time and the work then you should stop all efforts to growing your online presence.

The online world has changed and will continue to change and right now your audience is demanding content that serves them and if you’re not willing to create it for them why would they bother serving you by paying you for your product or service? You need to putt yourself into a giving mindset. The more you give the more you’ll get.

Remember, they are investing in you too. I know that you’re providing them with a product or service already, but before they take the plunge buying from you they want to know, like, and trust you.

That’s why you need to know who they are! When you know who your audience is you’re able to create content that will make them know, like, and trust you. 💡

2. Your Audience Guides Your Marketing

Your audience is the guiding beacon for your marketing –your north star if you will!

When you know your audience through and through you create clear, concise messaging that draws your audience in and keeps them coming back time and time again.

But you need to be speaking to one person –your ICA. Your whole messaging, content, funnels, products, and services are all based around serving this ‘one’ person.

When you know your audience deeply you’ll know things like how they don’t have extra funds around Christmas time for your new promotion but you know in the New Year they’re recharged and have some extra funds so you don’t waste your time, energy, and money trying to market to them until the start of the New Year.

You’ll know specific words they use to talk about their pains and dreams so that you can use that exact wording in your messaging, showing them that not only do you know what they are struggling with, you understand it and you have the solution.

When you do that right you make your ICA feel seen and heard. And let’s be real, at the end of the day we all hope to feel seen and heard by the people around us!

3. You’ll Have Clarity on Your Product/Services

If you’re in business, you are serving someone!

So how do you serve them?

How you serve depends on who you serve.

The only way you’re going to know how to serve your ICA is by knowing them!

I’ll ask this again, how in the heck can you serve someone you don’t know? How can you create a product or service when you don’t even know who you are creating it for?

That’s why you want to have your ‘North Star’. When you understand the person you are serving you’ll be able to provide a product or service that meets their needs perfectly.

Then you’ll be able to market that service or product in a way that will catch your ICA’s attention! Are you seeing how everything circles back to knowing and understanding your audience?

4. You’ll Save Time and Energy

When you have your one perfect audience member clearly defined you will no longer be wasting time and energy on creating content that misses the mark.

You’ll also save copious amounts of time trying to generate content ideas! When you know who you serve you know just what they need to hear and when they need to hear.

I know that sounds like a lot of pressure and maybe even a little impossible, but think about the brands that you follow. How often have they made content that speaks to you? Probably more frequently than you realize!

And that’s because they know who they are serving. They know how to talk to you. Although I’m sure it took them plenty of time and consistency before they got it figured out.

Figuring out your audience is a constant work in progress, meaning you’ll want to look at your ICA at least twice a year to make sure that your marketing, content, and product/service are aligned with who you are serving.

When you’re learning your audience be prepared to fail! And then learn from your ‘failures’.

Of course at first it will take more time to create content, but as you pay attention to what your audience wants and you consistently put out quality content for them, you’ll start creating content at a rate that surprises you!

You just need to make the commitment to be consistent.

5. They Are a Huge Part of Your Brand Identity

Your ICA is you a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years before where you are now.

Your ICA is you.

That’s why they are so integral to your brand identity. You and your ICA share similar, if not the same values, struggles, and dreams.

When you have those figured out you’ll be able to convey all of that through your content and your messaging.

As I hope you are starting to see, your ICA is the centre of your brand!

Knowing who you serve goes beyond their age, sex, location, and profession. You need to know who they are as a person. What they value, where they hang out with, what they struggle with and what they are dreaming about.

You need to connect with them and show them that you understand them, you need to show them that they can trust you.

Your business is run by how much people know, like, and trust you. They are pivotal to running a business and the only way to grow those is by talking to and connecting with your ICA.

So I hope you’ll take the time to get clear on who you serve, friend! It’s important as heck!
