The Beginners Guide to Getting Started on Social Media: Where to Start

First, I want to say that it is incredible of you to be here trying to figure out where to start.

I know that it’s no easy feat trying to figure out the lay of the online land. It’s almost like an alien planet that you’ve fallen into and you have no idea where new arrivals go or what they do.

But you don’t have to worry, because I have shown up as your guide! 😄👽 

I am going to take you through the journey from start to finish in hopes that you will end up showing up online confidently and consistently.

I understand that it can be quite overwhelming and highly intimidating starting your online journey. Like you, I started from scratch when I first stepped into the online world –from Facebook, to Instagram, to LinkedIn, to Snapchat, and all the rest. I also had to learn them from the bottom up. The only advantage I have over you is that I’ve spent more time on the platforms.

I assure you, once you know the basics and start to navigate the platform(s) consistently too, you’ll be BREEZING through 🤗

But first, you have to start from the beginning and build your way up to that. So be prepared to have moments of frustration. But also be prepared to have moments of excitement as you start to ‘get it’!

It’ll be a journey of mixed emotions for sure, but once you understand how to do it yourself you’re going to feel SO. GOOD. And I want to help you get there!

When I first dove in I started from a place of stress and awkwardness.

I distinctly remember joining Instagram for the first time when I was in college and I thought to myself, “Am I even doing this right?”

I most definitely felt out of place. 😬 Wondering who was I to bother posting anything on social media, “Who would even want to see posts from me?”

But here’s the thing, there are billions of people on this planet there are guaranteed to be at least 50 people who will be avid fans. (And of course a couple of haters, but please don’t let that deter you because there are ways to deal with them –which we will talk about!)

However, you’ll never actually know who and how many fans you have until you actually put yourself out there!

So how do you start to put yourself out there you ask??

Well, let me be your guide and take you through the beginning of your online journey 🤓

Where to Start

You may or may not be surprised by what I am about to tell you. I am certain you’ll understand why we start here once I explain it though!

So where do you start when you’re trying to get online?

Well, the first thing you’ll want to do is get very clear on who you serve.

You want to know them deeply! Like you want to know who they are, what they like to do, what they struggle with and how you solve it. What are their pain points and struggles and what are their wishes and dreams? How will you help them navigate their struggles and pains to reach their wishes and dreams?

You need to be painfully clear on who you serve. When you’re clear on who you serve and how you serve them, you can easily create content that resonates and attracts your ideal audience.

Because when it comes to creating content, you want to be creating content that serves a purpose and provides value to your audience.

This means that you are not creating content with the goal of making a sale. Seriously, gone are the days of ‘in your face marketing’. People do not want to be sold to! They want you to tell them how THEY will benefit from you.

Trust me, when you become really good at serving your audience (which you do by becoming very clear on who they are) the revenue will just flow.

You need to give to get.

And if you want to create content that provides value to your IDEAL audience, then you need to know who they are. Deeper than just name, age, gender, occupation, and education.

No, you need to understand how they feel. What makes them tick. You need to understand what your ideal audience values, where they spend their time and who they spend their time with.

Your marketing and messaging neeeeeeeeeeds to talk to your ideal audience.

You can’t do any effective marketing or content creation without knowing your audience.

This is foundational stuff here!

That’s why it’s so important that you do this thorough as heck and you do it right.

And I would also like to highly encourage you to find a photo of someone who captures your ideal audience so you can have a visual. (I like to have the stories printed and on my desk while I’m working to help keep me on track.)
