The Beginners Guide to Getting Started on Social Media: Introduction to LinkedIn

Est Read Time: 4. 5 Minutes

If you haven’t really used LinkedIn the last year then you might be thinking that it’s just a fancy resume or a Facebook for business.

And you are right, but let me tell you why it is so much more than that! 🤩

LinkedIn has grown in its potential just in the last couple of years, however, it is still a smaller scale platform compared to Facebook and Instagram…but don’t let that get you down!

I love what Rich Cardona said in regards to LinkedIn’s user numbers, “I want you to start thinking about less is more, the smaller the population, the better chance you have to stand out.”

I think that what he said is absolutely genius and it definitely has me thinking about how I am going to leverage LinkedIn a lot more than I currently am.

I won’t lie, I only recently began to be more active on LinkedIn. I have listened about how it has changed over the last two years and my interest has definitely grown, but after hearing a handful of statistics about LinkedIn I have realized that I need to be showing up here a lot more often. And maybe after this blog post you may be feeling the same way as me!

Super Important LinkedIn Statistics

Before I dive into what it’s like being on the platform now, I want to share some statistics I learned from Rich. These statistics are going to really help shed some light on what LinkedIn is and how to leverage it for your own brand!

Voting Donald Trump GIF by NRDC
  • LinkedIn has 722 million users
  • Content creation increased 60% in 2020
  • 57% of traffic is mobile phone
  • Users are more likely to reshare video posts
  • 4 or 5 people ‘drive business decisions’
  • 60% of users are 25-34 years old
  • The average user’s salary is 77K a year

So we know that on LinkedIn you will find other professionals who on average make 77K a year. And let’s be real, do you think that the average Tik Tok users make at least 77K a year…?

And the sky rocket in content creation in the last two years is unbelievable! And since it’s still ‘new’, you have a huge opportunity here if you start creating consistent content.

LinkedIn is not just a job site, it is a powerful tool that you can use to connect and build relationships with potential clients and even fellow industry experts!

And you know when you’re posting educational content people are going to be more receptive on LinkedIn because the people showing up on LinkedIn have a higher interest in learning and connecting. That’s why it is so important that you are showing up (on LinkedIn and anywhere else) authentically.

Types of Content on LinkedIn

I love that LinkedIn got more with the times and added all types of content! And if you’re a writer, like me, you’ll be excited to hear that people actually love long-form captions 🤯

I didn’t really believe it when I heard that in a podcast, but then I saw various polls on LinkedIn and there was an astounding amount of people who preferred the long-form caption over other content!

Let’s quickly go over the various types of content LinkedIn has:

  • Text posts
  • Article posts (long-form captions)
  • Image
  • Videos

If you have your account set as a ‘Creator’ you also have access to Live Video and Newsletters (with a minimum following of 150).

And you should know that some features are only available on mobile and not on the computer –sadly. So make sure you explore LinkedIn both on desktop and mobile app!

When it comes to deciding on what type of content to use, try it all out and pay attention to what your audience prefers. Remember, nobody’s audience is the same so you need to learn how to talk to them the best.

LinkedIn in Short

To put LinkedIn in a short description, I’m going to use Rich Cardona’s words for the purpose of LinkedIn.

Build business relationships.

Build your business.

Get attention.

And I’ll even add –to educate.

I love the capabilities of LinkedIn, including LinkedIn Learning! I think that this will be a hugely powerful platform and in the coming years, it will grow. Which is why I wanted to emphasize Rich’s point that you need to be thinking in terms of ‘less is more’.

Right now, you have the potential to become very well known on LinkedIn because it’s not as busy as the other platforms –yet.

I think as soon as LinkedIn adds that ‘one feature’ (not sure what feature yet) they will start to see huuuuge growth. But even they haven’t figured out that feature yet.

I am telling you, their day is coming, so make sure you’re prepared and already there!

If you’re a realtor or small business owner, I think that LinkedIn would be a great tool to leverage for your brand. Particularly, LinkedIn is an excellent choice for those selling B2B.

Alright, so make sure you’ve taken time to map out who your ICA is first. Once you have done that, you’ll know exactly where you need to be showing up for them to see you.

Once you’re sure LinkedIn is a perfect platform to meet and engage with your audience, set up your LinkedIn profile.

Until next week, I wish you success, prosperity, and happiness!
